TYPOGRAPHIC LIGHT SHADE

This is the prototype for the light I designed for Caroline's typography brief.

The narrative behind the piece is to encourage people to look closer at their surroundings to see things that they have missed or over looked before like all the beautiful examples of type I discovered in the city taking part in this brief.

The Black & White Isuue

A catalogue of badly taken photographs or as I like to call them “beautiful mistakes”. A matter of fact that these pictures are usually discarded, deleted and lost forever. This publication is a showcase of the beautiful art and abstract forms that these mistakes can produce. A celebration

of their survival and achivement of the photographs main purpose, to be seen.

The zine will be published monthly to coincide and present a showcase of the months best pictures on the blog. The pictures on the blog are submitted by subscribers to the zine and blog.

THOUGHTS.

The main process behind Brutalist architecture was to use the function of the building as its centre piece, for example a water tank or a protruding stairwell would become a focal point of the building contributing to its overall design and appearance.

My aim is to study and research the practice of Brutalist architecture and apply this to the design methods of the project, basically I will be challenging Graphic Design practice to prduce a new style of work using architectural methods.This will then be applied to design layouts that do not conform with the usual methods of layout and grids within Graphic Design.

For the first steps of this I am studying a number of subjects including Architecture, Graphic Design grids and layouts, Semiotics, Psychology of the way we receive process and interpret information and the Fibonacci sequence.

Once I have gathered enough research I will then begin to strip down the design basics and start drawing comparisons with the Brutalist architecture design rules and Graphic Design rules, then combine this data to produce a new set of rules as a hybrid of the 2 practices.

The main purpose of this is to try to encourage and inform people into a new way of looking at and perceiving Brutalist architecture and to expose the beauty in the design and function of these buildings. The main purpose of this is to enhance the way we perceive our surroundings and open our eyes to what we normally over look, take for granted and through lack of understanding sometimes detest.

Hopefully the success of the outcome of this practice would also provide me with a unique personal style I could apply to all my design work and processes.

BOOK IDEAS!

So far I am looking in skips and in builders yards (after hours) to find small samples of materials I could utilize into a small sculpture to display the book in. Finding materials such as safety glass as used in the blocks of flats doors to be fashioned into a book cover. The thinking behind this is to make the book appear and feel like the architecture with geometric design aspects, the weight in its appearance, the colour, the feel, etc.

Before I start to design the book I need to clearly discover its true functions, which are to be read, to inform, to be referenced and to appeal or attract attention. The content of the book will be based around imagery of Brutalist architecture, samples of materials to inform and educate on their functions, Detailed diagrams of buildings designs and quotes and references of architects, designers, philosophers and the general public.

ANIMATION/FILM/MOTION GRAPHICS.

These will be based on an audio and visual representation of the book.

Club Night Flyer Draft Number 1

Just some feedback on my ideas for art direction guys, thinking as the theme is going to be Hierarchy/Foodchain, I chose to use animals which are hunters and prey. This one is a hybrid of a fox and rabbit as a rough draft to get my point across (although I know it can be clearer at this moment I'm just experimenting with abstract images and treatments). I've kept the mood a bit dark on this one and added a dictionary entry to provide some supporting text of the theme. All the club night info shall be on the reverse, the idea is to create curiosity so its picked up and read.

This is my paper sculpture produced to represent what I believe the found type in Birmingham says about the city. For me its all about the history. The sculpture is set in Baskerville as a nod to the typographic heritage of the city.
